This is part of work-package 8300.

WP 8300 objectives:  Provide GPS ZTD data continuously for a period of at least one year of near-real time quality for NWP users. These data are to be used for the seasonal assimilation experiments and quasi operational assimilation experiments. Further GPS ZTD data on a best effort basis, to be used for case studies.

Deliverable D55. All PPC (partner processing centres) are determining ZTDs based on GPS observations obtained regionally. The ZTD, and eventual IWV and surface pressure, data are sent to an ftp server at MetO (the thorn server) and mirrorred by the TOUGH database server at ACRI-ST.

Precisely how the GPS data are processed to derive ZTD differs from one processing centre to another. Some information is given in the headers of the GPS ZTD data files, for detailed information see the yearly progress reports from each centre.

The GPS observations come from GPS sites owned and maintained by a multitude of institutions and companies, many of which are not themselves part of the TOUGH project nor of COST ACTION 716. We are very thankful for their data, without which a project like TOUGH would obviously not be feasible.  The area for which is processing centre is calculating ZTDs and the institutions from which they aquire GPS data are shown in the table below. The table includes two processing centres, GFZ and SGN, which are not part of TOUGH, but which contributes GPS ZTD data to the thorn-server at MetO as part of the COST716 project. In TOUGH we are most thankful for having access to these additional data, they come from a region of Europe very important to some of the meteorological institutes partaking in the TOUGH project.

The majority of the GPS ZTD data derived for TOUGH and COST 716 are delivered in near real time (NRT), which is a necessity if later such data shall be included in operational NWP. Some are delivered later, but derived as for NRT, in order for the impact studies to give a realistic picture of the potential of using GPS ZTD data in NWP.
